Amos Tauna, Per Second News, Karina Northern Christians in the 19 Northern States and Abuja under the aegis of the Northern States Christian Association of Nigeria(Northern CAN), have warned Emirs against forcefully engaging Christian minors into forceful marriages in the region.
Reverend Yakubu Pam gave the warning shortly after his election as the new chairman of the association in Kaduna on Friday.
Child marriage in Nigeria often ends a girl’s education, exposes her to domestic violence and grave health risks from early childbearing and HIV, and traps her in poverty, Human Rights Watch said recently.
The leadership of the association also faulted Nigeria’s membership of the Coalition of Islamic Countries against terrorism.
The association noted that there was the need for the govetnment to assure innocent Nigerian Christians that they would not be victims in the event that ISIS terrorist attacked Nigeria for being a member.
“Do Nigeria have the capacity to fight back like other members,” they said.
Pam took over from Archbishop Peter Jatau as the new Chairman of the more than 40-year-old association.
Firebrand Pam, a former Chairman of the Plateau CAN, once had a brush with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, for daring to suggest that the President’s handling of the Plateau crisis hinted of bias, during the meeting he conveyed for Plateau State leaders at the beginning of his visit to the state in 2004.
